When the weather delivers relentless rainstorms … bake caramelized pears. It’s your only escape, or do laundry? Yeah, my sentiments exactly.
Last week we may have dodged Hurricane Joaquin, but the rainstorms had a plan of their own. We were pounded with rain, flooding in some areas, and blanketed with a dreary, cloudy overcast. Not a good look for the well-planned weekend, but so soothing and relaxing for the worn-out, exhausted me.
Because I was suffering from rain overdose and exhaustion, it was in my best interest to sober up and rejuvenate by clamoring in the kitchen. In the company of Bosc pears, brown sugar, and pomegranate arils, I had no complaints.
My love for Bosc pears runs deep. I’ve enjoyed them most of my life, by far one of my favorite fruits to date. With fall in full swing, harvest for Bosc pears has just begun, and baking myself silly is in full progress.
As it continued to rain cats and dogs outside, I baked away. By the way, have you ever wondered what cats and dogs’ rain looks like? It’s not soft and furry nor as cuddly as you probably imagined, but it’s soothing and calming nonetheless.
How I love to eat thee;
Peeled, sprinkled in brown sugar, caramelized to perfection with toasted almonds served on a dollop of velvety vanilla yogurt. A must add, beautiful red pomegranate arils that glisten like red rubies.
What made this day so special, was the sweet aroma of caramelized sugar that permeated the air and soothing sounds of raindrops tapping at my window pane -It was more like pounding, but you get the point.
If you find yourself between the kitchen and a rainstorm… well, you know what to do. And if they’re caramelized pears involved, even better.
Who knew pears could taste so darn good? Me!
How To Prepare Sweet Caramelized Pears
- 3 ripe pears, peeled and halved (I used Bosc)
- 6 teaspoons of brown sugar (1 teaspoon per half)
- 1 tablespoon of sliced almonds
- 6 teaspoons of pomegranate arils
- 1 cup of vanilla yogurt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
- Place pears on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Sprinkle with brown sugar.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes until pears are browned and softened.
- In a medium bowl combine vanilla yogurt, vanilla extract, and cinnamon. Mix until well combined.
- When pears are done sprinkle with almonds and broil for 1 minute until brown.
- Serve warm, over a dollop of vanilla yogurt topping each pear with almonds and pomegranate arils.
- Enjoy!!!

Woah, this sounds amazing, Tonya! I’ve never caramelized pears before, but it sounds like something that would be right up my alley. And then add yogurt and pomegranate seeds? Sounds awesome actually! I have poached pears in white wine before…and that is definitely a treat! Give that a shot if you have some extra pears laying around. 🙂
